The past year has been a significant year in the history of the Canterbury Tamil Society. It has been 10 years since its formation, it has been a difficult year in which there has been numerous efforts made to maintain the integrity of the society and look after the Tamil culture in Canterbury.
The Year Started with the tragic events of the tsunami disaster in which the Tamil people were severely affected. Our society through the help of its members and the kiwi public got involved in a large fundraising event and it was a massive success. We would very much like to thank all who helped in that course. However, it is largely important we keep supporting the victims in the years to come.
This year the society celebrated the annual events that are the highlights for the Tamil people starting with pongal and through to Mid winter, New year and Navarathiri but the undoubted highlight was the Deepavali in which the fireworks display was breathtaking to say the least. Christmas was coincided with the memorial for tsunami victims, talking of memorials the society also paid tribute to fallen tigers in Mavverrar day celebration in November.
On the education front The Tamil school goes from strength to strength, this year the Tamil exams were held twice and they are a huge stepping stone to the future of the tamil speaking public. The children from the school continue to perform during the events and the job done by the teachers is to be appreciated by all concerned.
